Business Cards?

2 07 2007

No full transcript on this one.   For those who understand sign language, don’t read the summary  ;-] until u see the video clip, OK?

This was a bit of an incident way back in 1991 where Larry Evans and I had TV interview, and in the evening news, the news only showed me passing business cards instead of interview itself.  It was funny.

eyes open & thumbs up,

Ed

Interesting.

My husband, son and I recently went to a Santa Cruz post office on a Saturday morning and stood in line for 2 1/2 hours to get our passports at a passport fair (you get the paperwork expedited quicker this way). While there, the Santa Cruz TV new reporters came in to interview people about their wait.

I noticed the cameraman filmed a lot of footage of people’s hands filling out the forms, holding the forms and the large fan in the building. I had to chuckle. The actual time the camera spent on faces was tiny in comparison.

I guess he needed fillers in case the interviews were not so great. Ha.

Glad it wasn’t ABC cards…grin.

Last Friday, I was approached by a deaf man pushing ABC cards at the Smithsonian FolkLife Festival in Wash DC. It occurred to me that I saw that man before. Later, I recalled his name as I saw his ASL Stories DVD (which he still sells). I won’t tell anyone his name.

I decided not to vlog about it. It would just detract from the positive vlogs on deafvideo.tv, but I want him to stop peddling. It seems from my google search, he has a good reputation as a role model for us and our youth. Oh, well…it is his problem. I did not have my camcorder with me that day, I would have taped him. Would I post clips of him on Youtube.com and deafvideo.tv? Glad I’m not in that dilemma. I’ll let other deaf discover and spread the word about him.

NIce to see you signing on YouTube.

LaRonda, You are right. I was green and the interview did not go well. Larry was shown, but not me and only showed me passing the cards around. So guess I was the filler. ;-/

Steve, I had same situation not unlike u experienced a few years ago. I was astonished to find a well known deaf Texan passing ABC cards in a bar at Florida (I was attending a conference and bunch of us went to a bar). He was a reputable and had nice family. Like you I just kept to myself.

Phil, shhhhh don’t tell anyone [ha] after all the business card had “a”, “b”, and “c” in them [grin]

I’m glad you saw the humor in it. I would have been disturbed and fired off a letter of disappointment to the station that edited the clip to show only you passing out cards. Someone in the editing room thought to perpetuate the public image of deaf peddlers and selected that particular episode. Whether or not it was intentional, it did promote a stereotype.

What can be done about it afterwards? I don’t know. Had the image been in a print publication, letters to the editor would raise awareness that a mistake had been made. However, in video, the image is fleeting and any commentary, if it were possible, would probably be counter-productive.

Too bad subjects can’t have the power to vet their images.

Dianrez,

hmmm - truth be told, I hadn’t thought of that angle until you mention that. I think the title of the news was something like “Relay Texas a new relay service” or something like that. So if someone was watching the news clip, I don’t think (at least I hope not) I was passing abc cards around based on the title of the news - but, come to think of it, what else can the TV audience think when they see me doing that? You said image is fleeting and any comments could be counter-productive. That makes sense, too.

Perhaps, I should have huffed and puffed and filed a letter of indignant. In my defense, I was green at that time. ;-] Not yet seasoned advocate. You raised an interesting issue; perception. Cheers. Ed

My embarassment at Smithsonian Folklife Fest was the 6th time in my lifetime that a peddler created it. At least five of them were definitely deaf. ;)

The Fest was celebrating the Mekong River Heritage of the peoples in at least three countries that depend on the river for their livelihood. Their bamboo cane fish traps very fascinating to me. Now this somewhat well-known deaf guy pops up.

I’m middle-aged.

How many times in your lifetime has a peddler approached you???
