Order and Public Notice on 711

31 10 2007

All..

This is an old one (first part of Oct), but worth sharing.

Basically this Order and Public Notice by the FCC answers to issues of:  one: the ability of VoIP (voice-over-internet-protocol) to route caller dialing 711 to right relay provider; two: the ability of relay provider to receive a dialed 711 from VoIP service and be able to determine an approprite emergency center to call.

The Order rules that the FCC waive for 6 months the requirement that past Order on VoIP TRS that must transmit 711 calls to appropriate relay service.   The FCC also waived for 6 months for relay providers to call appropriate emergency center when receiving a 711 call from VoIP service.

Public Notice is asking for comments on all this.

Order and PN

One interesting bit of procedure:   the FCC waived because industry was able prove  "good cause shown" why the waiver should be granted.  This is how Industry get their waivers if they can prove a good cause why ruling should be waived.  In this case, they showed technical reasons why it may be difficult to process 711 through VoIP.  The FCC agreed, but gave only 6 months of waiver - meaning the Industry must figure technical solution for that before 6 months are up.
