Replace Video Interpreter?   What think you, Gentle Alert Readers?  I could not understand the sign language of avatar then I realized it was in BSL (England sign language).

Avatar Interpreter - an article.

Hi,
I was wondering about this also, because there is a game or at least it’s called interaction, where there are avatars going around, with names on the side, and then we can dress the person any way we want it… it’s called “There” not sure I remember the exact loaction, but we can virtually walk around, run, jump change clothes etc…also has expressions involved.

To replace an interpreter? That’s something … I would still prefer actual person much less than VRS … but thanks to the technology that this has came up. As for this, I have yet to see it come along here in the states.

I would use that on any of my internet connections, meetings online, etc… maybe a good way for online courses for deaf/hearing in ASL classes? Maybe I would call it AV-ASL-interpreter. AV = Avatar Virtual … hummm..

Not yet convinced, but gotta see what’s out there.

Fred,

Maybe in the future if they can include facial and body expressions, then avatar can be used for social events, friendly chats, etc. and keep real video interpreters for important stuff like business mtg, discussions with doctors, etc.? hmmmm

I personally think that once Artificial Intelligence can be elevated to the level of college then I can see avatar or even robots replacing video interpreters or any interpreters. ;-] Right now the most AI can do I think is equal to a mind of 2 to 3 year old kids (by that I mean cognitive thinking).

How about the many prompts we hearing people have everyday like “please insert your card now” or make your choice and press the corresponding number… all these automoated messages we “hear” everyday could also be automated messages signed by an Avitar, no this does not replace an interpreter because no interpreter is performing in these roles now….

Life includes more deaf and hard of hearing, life creates more work for sign language interpreters. We are and will be needed more than ever! Please find us ways to work where we are most needed. smile
