Video on Cell Phones?
16 04 2008All…
Technology has been moving at such rapid pace, that I’m running at full speed, yet still get caught in the wake of billowing dust from new technology innovations moving far ahead ;-] Anyway, this is an article of things to come in the near future! It won’t be long before we’re signing to pagers. Strange scene it will be for hearing persons to see a deaf person signing to a pager [grin].

That will be awesome if that could happen about the video on Cell Phones. Wow! Are you still planning to come May 28th? Do you have the address of where to meet us at? Just checking! Smiling………..Nancy

Do you know the reason why this capability is not happening now while it is widely available abroad? Is it because of availability of bandwidth (I’m not technical enuff so I may be using the incorrect terminology here).
On another note…do you have any comment on the frequent bashing going on over at Deaf Read about one VRS provider…I feel that there are a lot of miscontrued information being commented and continuous bashing that I see in the deaf community.
Kathy,
You have the right idea. It is because high speed broadband in wireless network not widely available. That soon may change, though, as telephone companies are hard at work adding towers here and there to maketht possible. Now why available abroad but not here? Remember America is a big country so lot of towers needed whereas in small countries in other world, do not need as much towers.
See my next response on bashing..

Kathy,
On bashing of one VRS provider. It could be the “crab theory”; try to take down the leader just because VRS provider has the largest market. On other hand, it could be the business practices that VRS provider chose to use that many deaf/hoh simply do not like and could only think to “bash” the provider.
You asked me for my opinion. I like to look at whole situation as a “growing pain” process. In any new industry especially the one that has technology that upgrades to better product/service (VRS industry just started in 2000) will have to go thru series of issues - many of them uncomfortable.
To top it off, federal government is involved as well. Just by looking at the rule and order, public notices, etc. that has been released by the FCC since 2000, one can readily tell VRS industry is still struggling with what is the ideal business mode. Recent Rule and Order on Emergency Access and Ten-Digit phone number plus upcoming workshop that the FCC will do in a couple weeks will bring VRS closer to the “ideal” business mode that both consumers and VRS industry as well as state/federal gov’ts will be happy.
Hope this is the answer you’re looking for? I try to be impartial in my response and the one I think is fair….

Ed,
You are a breath of fresh air! I appreciate your honesty and impartial response. Obviously, the crab theory is alive and well…especially among the X generation. It does not represent us (the deaf community) in good light in the eyes of the public, especially, FCC. Tayler ought to be a bit more objective and he sure could learn a lot from you. We are definitely going thru growing pains, as you’ve said but it does no good to bash VRS providers. Thanks Ed for your insights and I continue to look to your informative and factual vlogs.
I think bandwidth is only half of the issue. Lot of Europeans have the bandwidth because:
1) They have 3G set up
2) Their cell phones also are WiFi enabled.
I’ve been watching some VoIP projects like Fring, Gizmo, Truphone, Skype, and other things like that for them to add video calling capability for mobile phones (like some of the Window mobile models or Nokia models like N95, E80, etc). When that happens, I believe nothing is stopping the US customers from making video calls through WiFi networks.
However, in the USA, most customers aren’t willing to cough up the cash for those unlocked phones, and instead submit to just buying phones provided through their carriers. Some models actually do have WiFi capability, BUT carriers in the USA are disabling it because (I suspect) they worry it will cut into their data plan revenues (which is probably true).
