Go America’s Explanation of TN
2 07 2008All..
Kelby Brick explained very clearly the powerful and liberating new TN that the FCC recently released. View this and gain better undersanding of exactly what all this is about. Nicely done, Kelby.

You know how it is, no matter how carefully, how clearly you explained that to contact you, they (doctor, mechanic, technicians, etc) must use relay service, and they always call the home phone number and not use relay service and you get voice calls. [grrrr]
After Dec 31, 2008, you will be able to:
- Receive VRS calls from dumb technicians who will come to your house one hour before they do anything:
- Cable
- New Refrigerator
- Check out Septic Tank
- See if you’re at home
- Tell you that ur car is fixed
- Receive VRS calls from Doctors or Pharmacies
- That your prescription is ready
- That you’ll live, not maligant
- That you’ll die
The beauty of that is you don’t even have to explain that this number will get to a VRS provider. Just give technicians/doctors/etc. the new TN. Nice, indeed!
Not only that, you can give same TN to deaf that you gave to hearing persons and expect the call to connect you via video and with hearies connect via VRS of your preferred choice. Nice!
Can also use OJO to call a VP user. Really nice!
With all the hullabaloo, let’s not forget the REAL reason why the Rule & Order by the FCC to form TN is. It is to ensure that VRS/IP users are "automatically" identifed as to who and where they live when making an emergency calls by dialing 9-1-1.
Thanks to the FCC and all people who made this possible. I would like to take a note that we all should thank Sheri Mutti for being passionate and pushing this issue stubbornly and finally see Emergency Acess for Internet-based relay service as it should be. Hats off and kudos to you, Sheri!

This is wonderful. Great service for all the deaf and hard of hearing people. Will be so much easier! Thanks for sharing with me! Smiling…………Nancy
This is great news. I understand as Kelby spoke clearly but I am still puzzled as to how it works…how will I know that an incoming call is for my OJO or TTY or FAX machine when all use the same phone number?
Awww, thank you Ed! Really, it was a total team effort! I was thrilled to have a peek and what’s to come with this demo! Thanks to GoAmerica, and the joint team. I’m also thankful TDI supported the nationalE911 Stakeholder Council, who by itself worked diligently alongside with me. People like yourself, Claude Stout, Judy Harkin, Karen Peltz Strauss, Kelby (when he was atty for NAD), Jeff Rosen, (when he was atty for NCD), Rosaline Crawford, the California Coalition, HLAA, NENA (PSAP org)representatives, COMCARE (emergency responders org), consumers from all over the USA (Larry in Hawaii, Tom in Georgia, Toni in Texas, Cheryl Heppner in Virginia, Richard Ray, etc) with federal reps from USDOT’s NG911 folks, and USDOJ, last but not least,of course, the FCC. All Providers participated with their tech experts and attys. I’m truly humbled to have worked along with such leadership by all!
Bottom line, “it takes a village” to move mtns!
More work to be done ahead, but we are finally on the right path! Need to push to make sure all Providers join in and get the implementation phase up and ready to go by December 2008! Let’s rock n’roll people!
Salute!
Ed – One question – With this new 10 digit numbers, when we make a VI call, do they (VI) still ask us if we wish to have them explain the relay service to the caller? It would be nice not to be reminded unless the caller ask for a reason of this different “gender” call. Your thought?
Hope the VRS provides will have this TN ready before the December 2008 deadline.
Appreciate it.
James,
I believe that is up to the VRS providers and their policy on whether to ask VRS user that question or not. Not all do that. You of course can instruct VI on how to announce.
More likely the TN will be ready after Dec 31, 2008 so Jan 1, 2009. I don’t know if they will be ready before then.

Thanks Ed – I found it cumbersome when u stated “not all do that”. Almost all providers I tried to call, do ask that except with HOVRS. It depends on the profile they follow. Thanks for your valuable response. Happy 4th!

My Response: The FCC requires that numbers be ready BY the end of the year. Furthermore, as the demo shows, there’s no reason why providers cannot start giving out local numbers and make their systems inter-connected with the central system. NO MORE DELAYS!
Alice,
It will be intresting to learn if one can have TN for all these devices. I know that TN obtained from TN would be VP compatible. I don’t know if one can use that TN for fax, etc., so let’s ask the geeks out there and see if they can answer that quesiton? Geeks, can u answer Alice’s query?

But this doesn’t apply to CapTel…. I’m disappointed.
Bill,
I’m sorry I don’t understand. Can u explain why? CapTel ALREADY have direct line, they do not use 800 number. The home number of a CapTel user can be used. Do not have to explain to hearing person that this is a “CapTel” phone number as the number “automatically” connects to a CapTel user.
Ed B
Hi Ed
I found Kelly Brick’s video regarding TN numbers very interesting. I am still a little confused. Who will give us TN numbers? VP providers?
I recently got a new direct VP numbers from Sorenson. Is this considered as my TN numbers? Just wonder.
You have done many wonderful things. Dad and I are proud of you! Keep up the good work for our community.
Donna
Hi old friend, Donna!
VRS providers will be the one to give TN.
The new direct VP from Sorenson is not the same TN that the FCC requires. You may have to abandon the 800 number to get a new TN from one of VRS providers (including SorensonVRS). The new TN will have area code, not 800 or 866 so that’s nice.
Give a Texas sized bear hug to ur Dad for me!

You still have to dial an 800 number to reach a CapTel user, pay for a second line. For VRS and IP, you won’t have to do that. So, there’s an inequality amongst relay users in the CapTel field now. Also, the new order does NOT apply to IP CapTel at this time.
Bill,
Right you are – I believe. Let me explore this issue and get back to you if I learn more on this issue.
Inequality – that’s a word that – unfortunately – we all see too often from time to time and usually when new technology product or services comes along, that word pops up.
