Hi Speed Internet Accessible by Undeveloped Countries by 2010?
10 09 2008All..
Basically this is about Internet being accessible by billions of people. Done via 16 low orbiting satellites and local and national network having contract with O3b Network. Said the pricing will be comparable to fiber optic service in developed countries (I’m not sure how much that would be).
It said high speed Internet, so will that make it possible to use video phones in remote areas? It seems the service is limited to other countries, though. Maybe over time, the service will spread to worldwide and reach my house which is - frankly "remote" as my area does not have high speed Internet.
eyes open & thumbs up,

Befpre worrying about high speed Internet in underdeveloped countries we need to have full access in the United States. I live in a suburban area where there is no High Speed Internet available except via wireless, only cable Internet is available. Problem is the vendor is unreliable. I do hope that the FCC makes it clear that full wireless coverage is important. It will certainly help the economy in the US if we have full coverage.
I live in a remote area just like you, Ed. It’s beautiful out here with the lake frontage and wild animals around. I imagine it’s just as pretty for you, too. But we have our downsides, sigh ! By the way, are you familiar with the work Richard Ladner is doing at the U. of Washington ? He’s working on transmitting human figurines and movement wirelessly while putting the background at low resolution. That means the total number of bits transmitted 30 times a second would be reduced significantly. I knew his parents quite well. Ed and I played chess frequently while I was in the Bay Area. He taught at CSD at Berkeley. He and Mary passed away some 15 years ago.
Keep up the good work ! I’ll pass on any further tidbits on this wireless topic when I have a chance.
Better internet service in the year of 2010?? I do sincerely hope it will allow deaf people like us to communicate without any problem.
Reason for me to bring up is that I just found out that the internet service via Window Vista doesnt have any closed captioned for me to know what is going on - such as political, weather and sports….
Since it is required to have closed captioned on TV, then why is there no required law for internet service to have closed captioned??
That’s my major question for 2010..
Thanks!

It is surprising how some undeveloped countries are taking advantage of their ‘lagging behind us’ status by leaping over established systems and networks and landing ahead of us, developed countries.
First many countries in Africa has leapt into the mobile cellular network (HSPA - High Speed Packet Access) which is faster than 3g and this is popular - there are mobile networks covering areas where there are NO telephone lines! It makes sense geographically to invest in cellular networks rather than lay down telephone cables there.
Second is that we all know Japan is always at the forefront of the latest in high speed internet access but one of the USSR former countries, now independent, Lithuania, is the second to Japan in this area - the average standard UPLOAD broadband speeds there is over 3500kbps!
So we, established/developed, countries are paying for our traditional networks:-(
All the best
