Captioning on BlackBerry?

29 03 2010

Folks..

And it is free.  So media folks have no excuse to say technology problems.

"..today announced a new version of its popular do-it-yourself caption-authoring tool for digital media.."

"..which can be used to create closed-captioned videos formatted for playback on BlackBerry® smartphones. As before, authors can continue to write captions once and export them to formats compatible with QuickTime, Windows Media, RealPlayer and Flash."

Ed,

FYI, I just found one cool app for IPhone which is called, “subtitle.” It can be applying to movies that do not carry open captions. One I tried is to read subtitle from “Avatator.” The tricky part is the timing. You need to know when it begin synchronogically with the film. In addition, I am not sure how many subtitle being made for any movie. More to come…

I was thrilled when Google enabled autocaptions for YouTube videos HOWEVER I’m disappointed to find that YouTube are still not CAPTIONED at all on my iPhone. Who has time these days to sit in front of a computer monitor to watch videos. Like many others, I watch all my videos on the GO.

Speaking of cell phones, there is an exciting phone that’s slated to be released this summer; the HTC EVO 4G. This phone has a front-facing camera (& kickstand), and with it I assume, the ability to make video calls. Obviously, video calling would work on the 4G networks. (Maybe 3G, but is it acceptable for ASL?)

I was wondering if VRS providers could issue such devices a ten-digit iTRS phone number? I would love to have a cell phone that meets all of my communication needs, be it point-to-point video calls and VRS calls. (And as well as the old standby, ip-based text relay calls.)

I’m glad that new technology has come so that we can use captioning on our Blackberries but this technology has been around for regular videos online, and we are still sorely lacking in that area. This leads me to believe that we will still have a tough time getting videos closed captioned on blackberry.

Cousin Vinny

I heard about that phone last week and I think its going to be a big deal for the deaf community when it comes out. The front facing camera was specifically intended for Video Calls so I would be surprised if it didn’t work for VRS and point to point. For those not familiar with 4G…Its plenty fast enough for VRS calls and you will not be limited to hotspots like you are with Wifi. Hopefully the VRS companies are seeing this and developing and app or program that will take advantage of its features.

Iphone user,

I was excited about the Youtube’s transcribe audio feature. Right now its still pretty useless because it is not very accurate. If they can get the error rate down to about one word for every sentence I might find it useful. Hopefully Youtube and google keeps working on it and improving it because I think it’s a great idea.
